‘Canes Fall To Red Devils
The Monticello Hurricanes took on the Jackson Red Devils last Friday night and the Canes put in a good effort, but came away with a 35-0 loss.
The captains for the game were Jay Johnson #3, Jay Fleetwood #14, Noah Faubli #15, and Glendon Graybill #71.
Jackson won the toss and chose to defer, giving the Canes the ball to start the game. The Canes couldn’t get much started on their first drive and were forced to punt. Monticello started strong on defense with big tackles by Braden Lynch #7 and Shakur Sands #4. Jackson fumbled the ball on a snap and the fumble was recovered by Hurricanes’ Chantz Watts #56.
Monticello started their next drive with two passes from Fleetwood to Johnson and a good run by Colton Clay #25. The Canes got down to the 19-yard line, but couldn’t convert on fourth down, giving Jackson the ball after a turnover on downs. The Canes stayed strong on defense on the Red Devils’ next drive. Marquis Reese #24 had one tackle, Lynch had two tackles, and Clay had a tackle and a big sack. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 0-0.
At the start of the second quarter, the Red Devils were forced to punt. The Canes were forced to punt on their next drive and on the punt return, Sands had a touchdown saving tackle. With 8:34 left in the first half, Jackson scored the first touchdown of the game to put them up 7-0. On Jacksons’ next drive, Jakier Stone #5 had a touchdown saving tackle, but a few plays later, Jackson scored to go up 14-0. The Canes did great on defense the rest of the half with Fleetwood and Sands each getting a tackle, and Lynch getting 4 tackles. Going into halftime, the score was 14-0.
In the third quarter, the Red Devils scored 20 points but the Canes’ defense had good tackles by Lynch, Stone, Fleetwood, and Gavriel McClain #13. In the fourth quarter, the Canes’ defense was outstanding, giving up no points the rest of the game. McClain and Max Dotson #82 each had two good tackles, Jacob Parrish #63 had two tackles and two forced fumbles, and Dylan Nelson #6 had a fumble recovery.
Head Coach Doug Huff said, “We need to execute better, score when we have opportunities to score, take advantages of turnovers, and do a better job of making tackles because we had too many missed tackles. We played hard though and we are making improvements and I’m very proud of their effort.”
The Canes will take on Banks County Friday, September 23 in Homer. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support your Canes as they play their first region game of the season. Go Canes!
