Hurricanes Fall to Athens Christian

The Monticello Hurricanes traveled to Athens last Friday as they dropped their first regular season game against Athens Christian.

The Canes started the game off strong on defense as they did not give up any points in the first quarter, but because of a safety, the Eagles were up 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Canes had big plays in the first quarter including hits by Jacob Parrish (#63) and Maximillian Hess (#1). The Canes remained strong but gave up a couple rushing touchdowns and a punt return for a touchdown. The Canes couldn’t get anything started on offense so they went into halftime down 21-0.

Monticello came out tough in the second half with big plays including a deflection by Jay Fleetwood (#14) and a huge hit by Jay Johnson (#3) that caused a fumble and gave the Canes the ball. Although the Canes didn’t give up any points in the second half, they could not get anything started on offense. The final score of the game was 21-0.

Head Coach Doug Huff said, “We need to improve on offense. We need to execute and run plays better and we need to block better up front. On defense we missed too many tackles.”

Come out and support your Hurricanes as they have their first home game of the year against Pike County on Friday, Sept. 2 at Rose Bowl Field and kick off will be at 7:30 p.m
