Canes Prepare for Opener

Last Thursday, the Monticello Hurricanes took on the Lamar County Trojans. Although the Canes played tough on defense, they fell to the Trojans 35-0.

The Canes began the game with a kick off and managed to stop the Trojans on their first drive forcing them to punt thanks to a few big tackles by Marquis Reese (#24), Braden Lynch (#7), and Jay Fleetwood (#14).

On the Trojans next drive, the Canes played tough defense again with Reese breaking up a deep pass forcing the Trojans into another punting situation.

The Canes’ defense stood strong throughout most of the first quarter until the Trojans jumped ahead with a rushing touchdown putting them up 7-0.

Monticello remained strong on defense through the first half, but at halftime were down to Lamar County 21-0. Before going into the half, the Canes stopped the Trojans from scoring again with a broken up pass by Jeff Cain (#12) and a great tackle by Maximillian Hess (#1).

Head Coach Doug Huff said, “We started the game off well, but after that we didn’t execute the way we should have. We turned the ball over three times and had too many missed tackles. We need to improve on the offensive end and defensive end, but all the mistakes we made are fixable. We have to get better at execution. The boys are working hard to make a lot of improvements this week so that we don’t make these mistakes Friday.”

Come support your Monticello Hurricanes as they travel to Athens for their regular season opener against Athens Christian on Friday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. Go Canes!
