Lady Cougars Softball Season Is Under Way
Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team ventured to Thomas Jefferson Academy Saturday for a pair of contests.
The Lady Cougars defeated Thomas Jefferson 7-4 before falling to Edmund Burke 7-6.
Maddie Morton pitched the first five innings against Thomas Jefferson allowing five hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out three. Neely Bradford closed the game out working two innings allowing two hits and one run.
Offensively, Ashley Johnston was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI and Cassidy Cook was 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. Madison Johnson added a 2-for-4 performance while Ava Anglin was 1-for-4 with a run. Morton was also 1-for-4 with a run and Kenzie Rodgers was 1-for-1.
Piedmont scored one run in the top of the first and added two more in the third and fourth innings before scoring one each in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the one-run setback to Edmund Burke, Rodgers pitched the first three innings before Bradford handled the final four. Rodgers recorded one strike out while Bradford set down four Edmund Burke batters.
Madison Burnham was 2-for-4 at the plate and Cook delivered another solid outing going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Mattie Johnston was 1-for-3 while Madison Johnson was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Anglin and Morton also scored a run for the Lady Cougars.
Piedmont traveled to Brentwood in Sandersville Monday earning a 7-2 win. Lightning moved into the area during the top of the seventh and the respective coaches agree to call the game. It will be recorded as a victory for the Lady Cougars.
Morton was 2-for-3 at the plate while Madison Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Bradford finished 2-for-4 with Anglin and Burnham also contributing offensively.
Haley Ann Frank was 2-for-4 with two runs and Cook finished 1-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Morton pitched all six innings for Piedmont with nine strikeouts. She allowed only one earned run.
On Tuesday, August 16, the Lady Cougars fell to Windsor 8-7 in a game which went down the final inning.
Piedmont held a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the host Lady Knights managed to push two runs across for the victory.
Madison Johnson helped lead Piedmont offensively going 3-for-4 while Ashley Johnston was 2-for-4. Hailey Hooper had a strong day at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs, a triple and an RBI.
Frank was 3-for-3 with two runs. Cook and Morton also contributed at the plate. Morton drove in two runs. Piedmont finished the game with 13 hits as compared to 10 for Windsor.
“We battled until the end,” said coach Daniel Funt on Tuesday’s contest. “We got down 6-3 and came back and took the lead. We had a few too many mistakes and missed a few opportunities on offense to score more runs. We just need to keep working and improving.”
Bradford went the distance in the pitcher’s circle and had three strikeouts.
Piedmont’s varsity softball team will return to the field today, August 18 against Loganville Christian Academy.
The Lady Cougars will also host John Milledge Academy Monday, August 22 and Briarwood on Tuesday, August 23. All games begin at 6 p.m.
