Lady Canes Win Opener

The Lady Hurricane varsity softball squad split action over the past week earning two wins and two losses.

Last Monday, the Lady Canes defeated Ola High School 9-0 in their season opener. “It was a good win against a very good AAAAA program,” said Coach Chris Jenkins.“We did a good job of being aggressive at the plate and using the entire field.”

Action on the field didn’t go the ladies way last Tuesday in a 10-0 defeat to Houston County.

On Thursday, the squad defeated Eastside 4-0. “We had a great all-around game with outstanding pitching, defense, and timely hitting.,” noted Coach Jenkins. “We had several scrappy at bats which is what you have to do against tough pitching. It doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, but Mackenzie Tripp had the at-bat of the game, when she got down 1-2, fouled off several pitches and eventually drew a walk, which loaded the bases for Mia Jenkins to clear with her two-out double.

The team fell 1-0 to G.M.C. last Friday GMC. “We out hit them 5-3, but had too many strikeouts and wasted at-bats to beat a good team,” said the coach.
