Tim Lam To Be New Chief Magistrate

Tim Lam was elected the county’s new Chief Magistrate in a run-off election held Tuesday. Mr. Lam defeated Angie Steele, 689-585.

Mr. Lam and Mrs. Steele were vying for the position after no one received enough votes in a three way race in May to win the position. Mrs. Steele and Mr. Lam have campaigned hard over the last two months, appearing at public functions, advertising in this paper, and knocking on doors.

Seventeen percent of the registered voters voted in the run-off, with a large early voting turnout. Of the total 1,275 votes cast, more than 600 were early voters. In addition, more than 100 were absentee by mail. Only 548 votes were cast on Tuesday at the county’s three polling places.

The new term of office begins January 1, 2017. Ken Jackson is currently Chief Magistrate and did not seek re-election. Mrs. Steele is employed full-time in that office.
