School Board Approves Personnel

The Jasper County School Board approved numerous personnel changes at its regular meeting Tuesday evening.

The action came after an executive session, during which they apparently discussed the personnel, and after much of the regular business had been handled.

In regular business, board members approved the $20,666,543 school budget and a slightly lower than rollback millage rate of 18.140.

Board members were also pleasantly surprised and happy to accept increased revenues for both Head Start and the Pre-kindergarten programs.

They also agreed to renew their membership in the Georgia School Board Association (GSBA), and renew both their workers’ compensation insurance through GSBA and their Risk Management through GSBA.

The personnel moves included several new hires as well as transfers and resignations. New hires include:

And, finally, the board approved the retirement of Horace Hardwick Jr., Head Custodian, Jasper County Middle School, effective December 16. Mr. Hardwick has been employed with the school system more than 40 years.

There was much discussion about the new policy that will allow some four-year-olds to begin kindergarten. The board previously approved the concept, and since then several children were tested for the early start. Two children are being accepted into the school. At this time the state will not fund the four year old kindergartners, but Supt. Mike Newton is going to try to get that changed under the charter school system concept. The Jasper County School System will be a charter system effective July 1.

Board members also spent some time discussing the color of block on the multi-purpose building that will be constructed over the next six months. They also approved several field trips and fund raising requests. The board will be polled later about an incomplete use of facilities request.
