Prisoner Escapes, Is Caught

A man in custody at the Jasper County Detention Center Tuesday walked off a grass cutting work detail, stole an individual's vehicle from the county's Public Works Department (PWD), and left the area.

A witness told law officers that William Lee Clifton, 52, had changed clothes at a home on Blue Heron Drive in Monticello, and left. With the help of Newton County law enforcement, Jasper County deputies tracked Mr. Clifton to the Cedar Creek subdivision in Newton County where the vehicle was recovered. Further investigation led to a residence on Marble Drive in Covington. With the help of Newton County, a K-9 unit and a drone, the suspect, who was fleeing on foot, was located and captured.

Sheriff Donnie Pope praised the quick response of his people and the help of Newton County in apprehending the escapee in less than four hours.

The investigation is still under way, but it is anticipated Mr. Clifton will be charged with escape and theft of a motor vehicle. Other charges for Mr. Clifton and possibly others are possible.

Mr. Clifton was serving time for drug-related charges.
