Shiloh Knghts Close Out Regular Season
The regular season for the Shiloh Christian Academy Knights varsity baseball team saw competition hosting the John Hancock Rebels on April 28 and on the road at the Covington Academy Bulldogs on April 29.
Against John Hancock, the Knights and the Rebels both threatened with rallies but it was the Knights that eventually took advantage of them in a 7-4 win. John Hancock out-hit Shiloh 11 to 10, but John Hancock stranded 11 runners on base.
Caleb Dinn got on base three times against John Hancock. He singled in the fourth inning and tripled in the sixth inning. The game’s last lead went to the Knights thanks to a second inning rally that saw five runs cross the plate on a two-run double by Micah Compton and three singles.
After pushing across two runs in the top of the fourth, John Hancock faced just a 5-2 deficit. An RBI single and another RBI single triggered John Hancock’s comeback. However, Parker Wyatt, who pitched strong into the fourth inning, kept the meat of the Rebels line up off balance most of the game and ended the inning with ground outs.
It didn’t take long for the Knights to answer as it scored two runs of its own in the fourth. The team scored on a single by Caleb Compton and a steal of home by Wyatt. Senior Justin Nelson took over the mound duties from Wyatt and pitched the Knights to victory allowing just two hits over three innings, but not before the Rebels pushed across one run in the top of the fifth putting John Hancock down 7-3 deficit and running out of time against the Knights.
Head Coach Wyatt said, “I was proud of our boys for ending their home season strong and playing some of their best baseball of the season.”
“Nelson, our only senior pitched with command and handled himself well in front of his parents and peers on such an emotional home game, being his last. It was a milestone game for our team,” the coach continued.
The next afternoon, the Knights racked up five hits, but it wasn’t enough, as they fell 14-2 at the hands of Covington Academy Bulldogs.
Four relief pitchers made sure the win didn’t fall through the cracks for Bulldogs. The top of the first saw the Knights take an early lead, 1-0. The rally started when Micah Compton doubled. The lead stayed with Covington Academy after the first, when it scored three runs on an RBI single from the Bulldogs.
Covington Academy increased its lead with five runs in the second. A steal of home started the inning and was followed up by a double, bringing home a run and pushing the game out of the reach of the Knights. After pushing across one run in the top of the fifth, the Knights faced just a 14-2 deficit. A steal of home by Sam Filkins set off a Knights rally giving the team some life but was not enough as game closed with a loss of 14-6 .
Coach Wyatt added saying, “Our team was young and we knew that coming into the season having six freshmen on the roster. However, this group of guys have been improving at a surprising pace together the last three years and I anticipate some nice payoffs over the next few seasons. Its going to be a fun team to watch real soon.”
