Cougars Begin Region Tourney Play

Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams began play in the GISA Region 4-AA tournament this week in Warrenton at Briarwood Academy.

The Lady Cougars kept their season alive with a 35-33 win against host Briarwood as Amelia Dodson once again dominated on the court with 22 points, including two 3-pointers.

Jumping out to a 10-3 lead after the first quarter, the Lady Cougars led 15-8 at halftime but found themselves down 21-20 after the third quarter. Piedmont used a 15-12 run in the game’s final eight minutes Tuesday night to secure the win.

Lucy Tuggle added five points for Piedmont with Hailey Hooper scoring four. Madison McCart and Haley Tyler both finished with two points.

Next up for the Lady Cougars will be a battle with Monsignor Donovan today, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.

The Piedmont boys also kept their season alive with a 59-47 win against Brentwood in the opening round of the region tournament. Three players finished in double figures for the Cougars including Mack Brady (16), Chandler Burrell (15) and Zach Wilson (12).

Leading by just a point after the third quarter, Piedmont outscored Brentwood 22-11 in the fourth. Tanner Casey added eight points for the Cougars while Chris McClain finished with seven.

The Cougars now have a chance for another crack at Windsor today, Feb. 18 at 8:30 p.m.

Prior to the tournament, Piedmont’s teams wrapped up the regular season with a trip to Windsor Academy in Macon for region contests. The Lady Cougars fell 47-41 despite 20 points and 15 rebounds by Dodson.

McCart had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks while Tyler scored seven points with six boards and four steals.

The Piedmont boys had a tough go with Windsor falling 86-46. Wilson led the team with 11 points while Burrell and Brady both finished with eight. Michael Edwards added five points.
