Hurricanes Advance To State

The Monticello Hurricanes varsity basketball squads are headed to the first round of state playoffs following wins in the region tournament Tuesday evening.

The first round of state playoffs will be Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 16-17 at the site of the top seeded team in each region. With the top four teams from each region advancing to state, the order in which they advance determines which opposing seed they will meet. Region 4-AA will face off against teams in Region 1-AA with the #1 seeds facing the #4 seeds and the #2 seeds facing the #3 seeds.

The Lady Canes, seeded fifth after losing to Putnam County in the final regular season game last Friday, defeated Macon County 39-33 to move up to the #4 seed and final slot for state competition.

The Lady Canes will face Bleckley County at Bleckley tomorrow, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. to determine final placement headed into state.

Prior to Tuesday’s region tournament win, the ladies fell flat in a 50-38 loss to the Lady War Eagles who are seeded #1 and will also make the trip to state.

The Canes boys’ squad also earned a region playoff 58-45 victory over Northeast Macon Tuesday evening.

The Canes ended the regular season last Friday by hosting their region rival the Putnam County War Eagles and winning 78-73 in overtime before a packed crowd.

That win placed the Canes, 8-4 region record, in third place entering the region tournament which began Monday in Lamar County where the War Eagles faced off against Northeast and lost. The Canes faced that winner Tuesday and the victory assured them a trip to the first round of state while tomorrow’s matchup against Macon County, seeded second now, will determine the overall region seedings for state playoffs.

On Friday DeMiria Glover led in points with 29 and in rebounds with 16 while adding five blocks and three steals. Jordan Stone had the second highest points and rebound totals with 21 and 12 while adding nine assists.

Ashton Bonner had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. C.J. Adams scored 10 points and earned 10 rebounds.

The Canes will face Macon County in Bleckley tomorrow, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. just prior to the girls’ game ta 7 p.m. and the first round of state playoffs will begin Tuesday, Feb. 16 at unknown locations at this time.
