Varsity Cougars Earn Victories

A 22-point performance from Zach Wilson and a 19-point effort from Chandler Burrell helped the Piedmont Academy varsity boys basketball team to a 58-57 road win against Briarwood last Friday.

Wilson did the bulk of his damage in the first half, scoring 10 points in the first quarter and four more in the second.

Burrell had a strong second half scoring nine points in the third quarter and six more in the game’s final eight minutes to help Piedmont earn the close win.

Mack Brady contributed 12 points, including a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter.

The game was close throughout as the Cougars led 14-12 after the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime. Briarwood had evened the score at 43 after the third quarter but Piedmont outscored the Buccaneers 15-14 in the final eight minutes.

Michael Edwards added three points for the Cougars with Sam Wright adding two points.

The Piedmont Lady Cougars dropped a close 43-38 contest to Briarwood despite 18 points from Amelia Dodson. Nine of Dodson’s points came in the first quarter.

Madison Burnham scored 10 points for the varsity girls while Lucy Tuggle scored four and Haley Tyler made a three-pointer in the second quarter. Matti Smith finished with two points while Alexis Dodson added a free throw.

On Saturday, Piedmont’s varsity teams ventured to Newnan to face The Heritage School, a Class AAA program. The Lady Cougars fell 46-25 despite 12 points by Dodson. Tuggle finished with four points while Hailey Hooper, Smith, Mattie Johnston and Deacon Robinson all scored two.

The boys fell to Heritage 57-37 with Burrell finishing as the team’s leading scorer with 16 points. Wilson added six points while Edwards scored five and J.T. Webb contributed four. Chris McClain, Joseph Anderson and Talon Anglin all added two points each.

The Lady Cougars were overmatched in a 78-25 road loss to Brentwood Tuesday night. Dodson’s 16 points was one of the bright spots for Piedmont. Tuggle added four points while Smith scored three.

The varsity boys recorded a 62-47 victory Tuesday as Wilson had another big performance with 24 points. Burrell also finished in double figures with 12 points as did Brady, who added 10.

Piedmont held a 16-point lead at halftime doubling Brentwood’s total at 32-16.

Piedmont’s varsity teams will return to action Friday when they host Monsignor Donovan at 6 p.m. Piedmont will also host Covenant Christian of Loganville Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
