Varsity Canes Compete at Henry

The Monticello Hurricane varsity squads recorded victories Monday afternoon in the Henry County Holiday Tournament but tumbled in action Tuesday with the Canes just edged out by Luella High School and the Lady Canes falling to Henry County High.

The Lady Canes fell 64-28 to Henry County High School on the final day of the tournament. Head Coach Shakeirra Middlebrooks said the girls played very hard the entire tournament.

Junior Jameecia Thurman led the scoring with 8 points and freshman Madison Abbott had 4.

In Monday’s 49-26 victory over Ola High School, Madison Abbott had 23 points, freshman Mia Jenkins and senior Terisha Adams had 7 each.

In the tourney opener the ladies fell 51-37 to Green Forest. Madison had 19 points and senior Sheridan Tripp had 6 points.

The boys’ five point loss Tuesday afternoon came very late in the fourth quarter after jumping off to a quick lead they maintained well into the game. Tied at 41 with four minutes left, the momentum shifted.

The Canes easily handled Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy by a score 83-38 on Monday. The Canes outscored their opponent 56-19 in the first half and coasted the remainder of the game.

De’Miria Glover was named Player of the Game. He scored 22 points, went 6-of-9 from free throw line, garnered 8 rebounds and 2 steals.

Tyrin Lawrence and C.J. Adams each had 10 points; Jakeir Stobe, 8; Ashton Bonner and Matthew Lawson, 7 each; Shakur Sands, 6; Jordan Stone and Malik Crawford, 4 each; and De’Ivion Lawrence, 1.

Lawson and T. Lawrence were perfect in free throws. D. Lawrence had 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals; Crawford had 7 rebounds; Stone had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks; and Sands had 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block.

In Saturday’s 71-49 loss to Eagle’s Landing, Adams led the scoring with 12 points; Lawson had 9; Bonner, 8; Glover, 6: RJ. Whitlock and Desmond Nash, 4 each; and T. Lawrence, 3.

Lawson was perfect in free throws while earning 3 steals and 2 assists. Glover had 14 rebounds and Crawford added 9 more and 2 blocks. Adams had 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.

The varsity squads will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 5 with a region game against Crawford County. .
