Canes Fall to Lamar
The varsity Hurricane squads lost conference games on the road in Lamar County Tuesday evening.
The boys had a narrow 65-60 loss to the Trojans. The Canes commanded an early lead which lasted through three quarters. As the fourth quarter began the score was 47-38 Canes but the Trojans mounted a huge charge scoring 27 points to the Canes 13 in the final quarter.
De’Miria Glover had 20 points; Jordan Stone added 12; Ashton Bonner, 9; R.J. Whitlock, 7; C.J. Adams, 5; Tyrin Lawrence, 3; and Malik Crawford and De’Ivion Lawrence, 2 each.
Crawford and Whitlock were flawless at the free throw line. Glover came up big in rebounds with 10 and Whitlock added 7. Bonner had 8 assists and Matthew Lawson had 6 steals. Whitlock also added 2 blocks and Glover 1.
‘We led the entire game and then Lamar’s best player got hot in the fourth making 17 of his 35 points late in the game,” said head Coach William Thomas. “When we should have been running time off the clock we rushed our offense and committed crucial turnovers. Lamar never led until 30 seconds left in the game when they went up by 1. They ended the game on an 11-0 run which took less than a minute!”
The varsity squads fell to the Jones County Greyhounds in Gray last Friday but rebounded nicely with an on the road sweep of Greene County last Saturday.
The Lady Canes lost 66-41 against Jones County. The Lady Canes were only down by 8 points at halftime, but the Lady Hounds put up some stellar offense in the fourth quarter scoring 24 points.
Freshman Madison Abbott led the team with 26 points scoring 15 of those in the first half. Senior Terisha Adams added 6 points; freshman Mia Jenkins, 5; and junior Jameecia Thurman, 4.
The Lady Canes redeemed themselves Saturday night against Greene County with a 46-41 victory. Thurman led the team with 18 points and Madison Abbott had 10 points.
The Lady Canes are currently 2-0 in the region. The varsity squad is coached by Shakeirra Middlebrooks, assisted by Tracie Glawson, John Hopper, and Steven Hopper.
Like the Lady Canes, the boy’s squad fell to Jones by a score of 81-72 and defeated Greene 77-32.
The loss to Jones was narrow as the Greyhounds led a fourth quarter charge. At halftime a single point separated the teams with the edge to the Hounds with third quarter action keeping it close before a fourth quarter run for the Hounds at home. The Canes defeated the squad in the first matchup on December 1.
Scorers were Glover with 13 points T. Lawrence, 11; Bonner, 10; Crawford, 8; Stone, Whitlock, Adams, and Lawson, 7 each; and Desmond Nash, 2.
Stone and Glover were flawless at the free throw line. Glover had 8 rebounds, Whitlock added 6 rebounds while Stone, Crawford, and Lawson each had 4 rebounds.
In the Greene competition, Bonner had 15 points; Stone, 14; Adams, 10; T. Lawrence, 9; Nash and Lawson, 8; Glover, 7; De’Ivion Lawrence, 4; Whitlock, 2.
T. Lawrence had three three-pointers in the back-to-back games at Jones and Greene. Whitlock and Glover were flawless at the free throw line. D. Lawrence, Nash, and Glover each had 7 rebounds.
The Hurricane squads are scheduled to play in a holiday tournament beginning Friday, Dec. 18. The Lady Canes will face Green Forest at 6 p.m. and the Canes will face Eagles Landing at 7:30 p.m. in Henry County.
