School Board Discusses JROTC, Personnel, More

Members of the Jasper County Board of Education had several personnel items to approve, and heard more about incorporating a JROTC program in the school system. The board also approved a resolution to become a Charter System, which was more of a formality for the state, as it was originally passed by the board in February.

For personnel, the BOE approved the following new hires: Heather Bosynak, part-time PEC Paraprofessional at Jasper County Primary School (JCPS); Claudia Weathers, SIG Interventionist and Stacey Bloodworth, PEC Paraprofessional at Washington Park Elementary School (WPES).

Additional new hires are Lee Edwards, teacher; Tiffany Salembier and Gary Anglin, paraprofessionals for Jasper County High School (JCHS); Cody Brantley, Technology Support and Rebecca Scruggs, bus driver.

Resignations accepted by the BOE include Heather Fields, Anthony Jones and Leona Jones, bus drivers; Debbie DuPree and Whitney Lyon, school food assistants; Patricia Stafford, teacher, and Logan Gerlach, Technology Specialist.

Sheri Guli was transferred to Washington Park Elementary School as part-time paraprofessional from substitute paraprofessional. Tiffany Tripp, bus monitor, was terminated.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Newton told the board that a survey had been done to poll students as to their wanting an ROTC program. The students used survey monkey and were asked five questions pertaining to an ROTC program. For all five questions, which included a program to include community service, scholarship opportunities, and leadership for students, there was a 60 percent or greater interest among 300 students polled.

There was some discussion as to the cost of the program. Board Chair, Dr. Shannon Barton explained that a JROTC is locally funded and that some actual figures would need to be looked at. She reiterated to the other board members that the federally funded ROTC program was not currently accepting applications, as the funding for personnel was nonexistent.

Dr. Newton also stated that if financially feasible, having a JROTC program would look good, and be a step in the right direction for potentially getting a ROTC program in the future.

The board also voted on policies Tuesday night placing three policies on the table for review for a 30 day review and one policy, (JGJA) Suicide Prevention, was passed for final approval. The three policies for review include one on attendance, FMLA, and child abuse or neglect and can be found on the school’s eboard website. Visit www.jasper.k12.ga.us for more information.
