Canes Lose in Another Heartbreaker
In a wet and dreary game last Friday, the Monticello Hurricanes traveled down to Crawford County where they fell late to the Eagles 26-21.
The Canes played pretty solid ball overall but turnovers doomed them in the end. Jordan Stone had a good game, running the ball well and recording several tackles on defense. Jay Johnson also had a solid game, returning a kickoff for a touchdown in the waning minutes of the ballgame.
Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as the game slipped from their hands.
The Canes kicked the ball off to start the game. The Eagles drove the ball down the field and were eventually stopped on a fourth and long by Stone and Chris Anglin, giving the ball over to the Canes.
Johnson started the drive off nice with a 25 yard run around the edge the first play. Deraney hit Stone for a nice pickup a few plays later, putting them on the 20 yard line. The drive eventually stalled, giving the ball back to the Eagles.
The defense for both teams held tight the next few positions, with Matthew Hollis recording an interception around the Canes’ 40 yard line. A few short plays later, Deraney took the ball around the left side, while everyone else was oblivious, all the way to the house. Crawford nailed the extra point to put the Canes up 7-0.
The Eagles scored next on a long drive, tying the score at seven. The Hurricanes’ offense stalled on the next possession where the Eagles intercepted the ball, scoring soon after and going up 14-7.
The Canes scored next after half, where Stone took the ball around the right side for 65 yards for the score, broken open by a nice block from Garrett Scroggs. This tied the score at 14.
The next Eagles’ possession, Colton Clay intercepted the ball, giving the ball back to the Canes. The drive resulted in a punt, where the Eagles drove the ball down the field on a long possession ending in a touchdown, but missed the extra point, putting them up 20-14.
The Hurricanes took over and began to drive, but the Eagles intercepted the ball and took it in for a touchdown. They missed the two point conversion, putting them up 26-14 with time winding down.
Johnson took the next kickoff return all the way back for a TD, making the score 26-21, but the Canes could not round up anymore points, leaving the ending score at that.
“We fought hard this week,” Coach Doug Huff said about his team. “We always do. We just need to limit turnovers and continue to work on execution.”
The coach said Macon County is a very big and athletic team, and expects his team to bounce back this week. All Hurricane fans show up at Rose Bowl Field this Friday night as the Canes take on Macon County 7:30 p.m. at home.
The student section will be wearing pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
Go Canes!
