MS Cougars Defeat Briarwood at Home

The Piedmont Academy Middle School Cougar football team was back on the field last Thursday as the Cougars defeated Briarwood 36-6 at home.

It was another sound team effort which led to the victory, coach Alvin Hawkes said.

“The team played hard, especially in the second half,” Hawkes said. “Briarwood really tried to take away our inside running game. However, we were successful on the outside.”

Helping lead the offense were Tate Marks and Owen Brady. In addition, Brady and Dylan Coe both had two-point conversions.

“Defensively, we started a little slow as Briarwood put together a long drive to open the game,” Hawkes said.

“After that one score, however, our defense stepped up.”

Payton Wallace had a key interception in the win and sixth grader Ryan Holder had an interception on the last play of the game.

It was another strong performance by the offensive line, which featured left tackle Blake Calhoun, left guard Cameron Mobley, center Mark Hicks, right guard Jake Matthews, right tackle Caleb Coffee and tight end Zach Spivey. Brady’s play at blocking fullback was also key to the win, coaches said.

Piedmont’s Middle School Cougar football team will travel to Skipstone today, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.

“They have an excellent team so it should be a good game,” Hawkes said.

The middle school squad will host Bethelehem Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
