Hurricanes Lose to Bulldogs
The Monticello Hurricanes traveled to Madison last Friday to take on the Morgan County Bulldogs. After a solid first half of play from the Canes, the Bulldogs crept back in the second half and took the win 28-14.
The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and began to drive down the field. The drive quickly stalled out as the Canes defense held on a fourth down, resulting in a turnover and giving the ball to the Canes.
They drove the ball down the field, keeping the drive alive with a completion from Thomas Deraney to Jay Johnson on a third and long. Then on a fourth down on the 20 yard line, Deraney tossed up a pass to the left corner of the end zone, connecting with Tyrin Lawrence for the score. Bryce Crawford tacked on the point after, making it 7-0 in the Canes’ favor.
On the next possession, the Canes’ defense held strong once again, forcing the Bulldogs to punt. The Canes began to march again, with Deraney hitting Jordan Stone out of the backfield on a third down for about 45 yards, down near the 20 yard line. Unfortunately, the drive ended with a turnover on downs on the 10 yard line.
The next possession for each team resulted in a punt. Morgan’s following possession was a long drive that eventually led to a score, tying the game at seven right before the teams entered the locker room for half time.
The Canes received the kick after halftime and started driving right down the field. Stone, having a solid game up to this point, capped off the drive with a five yard TD run. Crawford hit the extra point putting the Canes up 14-7.
While the Cane defense held the Bulldogs a few more times throughout the game, Morgan’s offense began to click after that, putting the ball in the end-zone twice more and holding the Canes for the remainder of the half.
When asked what the difference between this week’s game vs Morgan and last week’s, Coach Huff said, “we played much more confident. We finished drives and our defense played extremely hard. There were still too many missed tackles and line up busts, so we will continue to work on that.”
The coach expects tomorrow’s game at Putnam to be a tough test. They have won the past three games and will come into the game very confident. We want everyone to come support the Hurricanes this week at Putnam.
Go Canes!
