Newcomer Wins Contest with 13

LYLE WEBER (L), REP. SUSAN HOLMES

Lyle Weber loves Monticello, and The Monticello News, and so much more about this small town that reminds him of his hometown in Illinois.

And now he is a big fan of The Monticello News football contest. What started as a friendly rivalry between co-workers gives him bragging rights this week as the only football contest player that got as many as 13 correct in the football contest.

For his effort he picked up a $25 prize from State Rep. Susan Holmes, who along with Sen. Burt Jones, sponsor the football contest. Rep. Holmes presented the prize to Mr. Weber at her home in Monticello Monday.

Mr. Weber works at Norton Packaging, and says he loves his job, as well as his commute from Conyers to it. Right down Hwy. 212, and he’s here, he said. He began working at Norton about a year a half ago, but didn’t get involved in the football contest seriously until this year. He has a co-worker who plays faithfully, so he said he bet he could do better than him. Last week, he did.

Mr. Weber only missed on South Carolina’s loss to Kentucky and Boise State’s loss to BYU.

This week there’s a whole new slate of games to choose from—high school, college and pro. All a contest player has to do is select the winner of each game listed, and print it on an official entry form or a plain piece of paper, guess how many total points will be scored in the tie-breaker game, and submit the entry in person or via fax to The News office, 247 West Washington St., in Monticello no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

Every player who correctly guesses the winner in 12 or more contests listed has his or her name added to the grand prize honor roll for four premium tickets to the Chick-fil-Peach Bowl in Atlanta on New Year’s Eve.

Last Week, Diltra Griggs Stewart presented the prize for the Bank of Monticello. The News mistakenly left Mrs. Stewart’s last name off the cutline. We sincerely apologize to Mrs. Stewart, her family, and all our readers for the error.
