MS Cougars Defeat Briarwood

It’s been so far, so good for the Piedmont Academy Middle School football team.

The Cougars defeated Briarwood Academy 38-12 on the road Sept. 3 to start the 2015 season.

Coach Alvin Hawkins said he was pleased with how his players competed in the first game.

“We have 16 young men out for the team this year and I am excited that we have so many out to play,” the coach said. “Our goals for the season are to become better football players and to learn more about the game.”

During preseason preparation, the coach said the players have shown quality effort.

“We have already learned a great deal,” Hawkes said. “The whole team is excited about the season.”

Hawkes is being assisted by Ray Schad for 2015.

Eighth graders on this year’s team include Tate Marks, Owen Brady, Dylan Coe, Zach Spivey, Payton Wallace, Trent Coots, Blake Calhoun and Caleb Coffey, Seven graders include Cameron Mobley, Jake Matthews and Landon Sinyard. Sixth graders on this year’s Middle School team are Ryan Reeves, Ryan Holder, David Bishop and Mark Hicks.

Coe, Marks and Brady each scored touchdowns in the season opener. Coe plays quarterback for the Middle School Cougars with Brady at fullback and Marks at tailback.

“We played well,” said Hawkes. “It was their third game so we played good defensively. After their first drive, we held them until late in the fourth quarter.”

The coach said his team ran the football most of the afternoon, attempting only three passes.

Piedmont will remain on the road this week as the Middle School Cougars venture to Covenant Academy in Macon today, Sept. 10 for a 4 p.m. contest.
