Qualifying for City Election Is Next Week
Qualifying for the city of Monticello election begins next Monday, Aug. 31, and continues through noon, Thursday, Sept. 3.
The seats up for election, because of staggered terms, are those of Mayor Pro-Tem, City Council, District 1, Post 2 and District 2, Post 2. Those seats are currently held by Bobby Jacobs, Cornell Williams, and Katherine Alexander, respectively.
Mr. Jacobs this week announced that he would not seek re-election, and according to a Facebook post plans to seek the position of Chief Magistrate which will be up for election in November 2016.
Mr. Williams has said he will seek re-election, and Mrs. Alexander has not said.
The qualifying fee for Mayor Pro-tem is $215, and the fee for council is $162.
City residents wanting to vote in the November 3 general election must be registered to vote no later than Monday, Oct. 5.
Qualifying for the positions is done in the clerk’s office at City Hall, 123 West Washington Street, on the Square in Monticello. The office is open 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day. If a runoff is required, it will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
