State Baseball Champs Honored
Piedmont Academy saluted its 2015 baseball state champions with its annual team banquet recently.
The Cougars, who won their second GISA Class AA title in as many years, had the chance to gather one final time as a team. Coach Daniel Funt, who guided the team to a state title in his first season as head coach, said it was nice to honor the team for its accomplishment.
Hunter Knox was awarded the Scholar Athlete award. No other individual team awards were presented, Coach Funt said.
Zach Beggs, Josh Williams and Michael Davis, seniors on the 2015 squad, along with Brock Carter, a sophomore this past spring, had each previously been named All-State and All-Region.
Piedmont, for the second year in a row, went 8-0 in the postseason, eventually sweeping Windsor in the state championship series played in Monticello.
Beggs, Williams and Luke Andrews were later chosen to compete in the GISA All-Star game where players from Class AA schools faced off against players from Class AAA programs. Knox was also selected to play in the All-Star contest, but was not able to compete.
“I really didn’t do a lot of talking,” Funt said. “It was about the players and a chance to let them enjoy the state championship. We appreciate what our seniors did for our program and wish them the best as they move forward. For our baseball program, we are looking ahead to spring and hope to be a contender.”
