Lady Cougars Play Well at Tourney
Piedmont Academy’s softball team saw marked improvement from the first tournament of the season to the second.
The Lady Cougars went 3-0 in play at their own event last week, winning two games on Thursday and one on Saturday. Piedmont rallied to defeat Heritage 8-7 on Aug. 6 before defeating Trinity-Sharpsburg 2-0 in eight innings.
Piedmont also earned a 13-1 win against Edmund Burke in four innings on Saturday.
“It was a good tournament,” said Piedmont coach Daniel Funt. “The weather was good and we had a good turnout. Hopefully, we ended up raising some good money for the program. We appreciate the schools who took part. On the field, we played better and made a good bit of progress.”
Matti Smith started the game with Heritage before Neely Bradford was called on in relief. Piedmont jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Heritage moved in front on two occasions.
Madison Johnson and Bradford both connected for homers in the win. Bradford’s two-run homer proved to score the winning runs for the Lady Cougars.
Bradford also earned the win against Trinity-Sharpsburg.
“We struggled offensively, but played better defensively in that game,” Funt said.
Freshman Maddie Morton was the winning pitcher Saturday.
“Maddie settled in and looked more like herself,” said her coach. “We were able to get several players game action which was a positive.”
The Middle School Lady Cougars fell 8-6 to Trinity-Sharpsburg. The team battled back from a 5-1 deficit. Kenzie Rogers pitched in the contest.
Piedmont will travel to Trinity-Sharpsburg today, August 13 for a 6 p.m. contest. The team will then travel to John Milledge on Tuesday, August 18 at 4:30 p.m.
The Middle School Lady Cougars will also play Thursday and Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
