Daily Routines

A friend and I were talking recently about daily routines. He said that he was ready for school to get back into session so that the daily routine of their family could be re-established. Summer and vacation time are nice. Sometimes they do break into the routine of daily living, but in a nice way.

Summer also interrupts spending habits of people, too. Unfortunately, we all probably spend more during the summer months than we intend to spend or need to spend.

We spend getting ready for summer. We spend during summer. We spend getting ready for the end of summer. As my friend reminded me, every time we leave our home we are doing one of two things – making money or spending money. Of course, this makes a nice segue into our devotion for today.

Every time we leave our home we are doing one of two things – witnessing for God or witnessing for satan.

In Matthew, chapter 5, verses 14-16 we read that, “You are the light of this world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light so shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. “

Today, there are not enough men, women and young people letting their light shine for the Lord. There are many who have the light, but they are hiding it under the bushel basket because they do not want to be different. They are afraid to say or do what Christ would have them to say or do for fear of appearing different in the eyes of the world.

As a young adult, I did not participate in those things that many do while “sowing their wild oats.” I can honestly stand before a group of high school students and college students and say I did not drink, smoke, use drugs, or engage in premarital sex. Remarkably, I lived. Practicing abstinence toward these vices did not kill me. There is no doubt that some considered me an odd ball, but this didn’t matter to me. What mattered to me was living in a way that was pleasing to God and demonstrating that I believed in His Word and teachings. I let my light shine.

As an adult, I still strive to live in a way that is pleasing to God and demonstrates that I believe in His Word and teachings. I still seek to let my light shine. Some days I do a better job than others. Some days I fail miserably. In the end, when the Lord surveys my life with me, I hope the Lord will be able to see someone who spent more of his life seeking to let his light shine for Him, than hiding it under a bushel basket so that satan could be glorified.

We are living in an unprecedented time of evil. It is time for those who call themselves Christian to begin letting their lights shine for the Lord in unprecedented ways.
