Golfers Compete at Region

The Monticello golf teams traveled to Cochran to compete in the Region 4AA golf tournament on Monday with the boy’s team earning the region runner-up title.

The tournament took place at Uchee Trail Golf Club where the boys’ team finished with a team score of 378, 18 strokes higher than the state cut score of 360.

Drew Williamson was the team low medalist with a 91 placing him in sixth for individual standings.

The Lady Cane golfers finished third in the region with a team score of 244, 24 strokes higher than the state cut score of 220.

Savannah Fritz was the team low score ending in a tie for third place.

Team coach Matt Tumlin said that schools are waiting to see if the state will raise the cut score needed to proceed to the State Sectional tournament on Monday, May 4 in Vidalia.

“Baylee Keesee, Rileigh Evans, Savannah Fritz, Jacob Bowers, Drew Williamson, Brock Lummus, Zach Mooney, Payton Harwood, and Daniel Cronan have each represented the school with integrity all season,” said Coach Tumlin.

Prior to the tournament, the golf teams played a three way match with Washington Wilkes and Greene County at Harbor Club last Tuesday despite the weather. The boys ended in a tie with Washington-Wilkes and bested Greene County.

The girls beat Washington-Wilkes by one stroke, and Greene County by three strokes.

Last Thursday, the teams took on Alcovy High School at Hunter Pope Country Club in the rain. The boys fell to Alcovy by 16 strokes, while the girls were beat by only 5 strokes.

“That was a tough day. We played over half the match in the rain,” said the coach.
