Diamond Cougars Defeat Region Foe
Piedmont Academy’s baseball team took an 11-1 road region victory Tuesday against Windsor Academy in Macon.
The win improved the Cougars to 2-0 in region play as Zach Beggs went all six innings while scattering seven hits and striking out 10. Beggs allowed just one earned run with two walks.
“We are continuing to improve,” said coach Daniel Funt. “We played well (against Windsor).”
With the game tied 1-1, Piedmont scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take control of the contest. The Cougars would then add two more in the fifth and three more in the top of the sixth.
At the plate, Noah Quick was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Josh Williams was 2-for-4 and Hunter Knox had one of his better games of 2015 going 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Michael Edwards added a 2-for-3 afternoon with two RBI and a run scored.
Funt has seen his team score 26 runs in the first two region games of the season.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Diamond Cougars took a 15-0 win in the 2015 region opener against Monsignor Donovan.
Piedmont needed just three innings to send the Rams packing. Several Cougars had big performances at the plate including Quick (2-for-2, three runs, one RBI), Mack Brady (2-for-3, three runs, two RBI), Beggs (2-for-2, two runs, three RBI), Luke Andrews (1-for-2, one run, two RBI), Knox (2-for-2, two RBI, one run), Alan Powell (1-for-1) and Mike Davis (1-for-1.)
Davis earned the win working three innings and not allowing a hit while striking out five batters.
Even in the 15-run performance, Piedmont left four runners stranded.
“It was good to break out and hit the ball well,” Funt said. “Also, several players saw action in the game, which is always good to see. It was great to start the region with a win.”
Last Thursday’s game at Gatewood was rained out and will be made up later this spring. A new date had not been finalized earlier this week.
