Sheriff Commends Deputy, Resident

DEPUTY POUND, SHERIFF POPE, DR. JORDAN (L-R)

Jasper County Sheriff Donnie Pope presented plaques to Deputy Cam Pound and Jasper County resident Dr. Wiley Jordan for their acts of heroism on February 6 when they climbed into a burning car and pulled the occupant to safety.

The incident occurred February 6 on Hillsboro Street, and the deputy was the first on the scene. At that time, there was a small flame under the car which was in a ditch, he said. He told the occupant to unbuckle his seat belt and get out, but he appeared out-of-sorts and gave no indication he understood what the deputy was saying.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jordan came upon the scene and realized that there was still an occupant in the vehicle. He got out to help, and as he and the deputy were trying to get the man from the car, flames lapped from the bottom of the car, as something ignited and there was flames all around the vehicle.

Dr. Jordan said he was about to reach for his pocket knife to cut the seat belt about the time the deputy reached across the man and got it undone. Then, the two of them pulled the man out of the car and down the street to safety, away from the burning car.

Sheriff Pope said he knew good folks do good things, and he said he knew these two gentlemen were good folks. But he also said people who do good things should be recognized for their efforts.

After the brief program commending the two for their efforts, they were able to view the video of what happened that night. Dr. Jordan had not previously seen it. He was on his way home from work in Macon when he came upon the vehicle. He said at first he didn’t realize someone was still in the vehicle, as there were a number of people standing around.

Deputy Pound has worked with the sheriff’s office for more than two years, but has only been on the road less than six months.
