Lady ‘Canes Finish Season

The Lady Canes wrapped up their 2014-2015 season with a first round appearance in the Georgia High School Association’s (GHSA) AA state championship tournament at Metter High School on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Canes, seeded fourth behind Putnam, Bleckley, and Macon, faced off against the 3AA #1 seed after an unscenic journey down I-16.

Jumping out to an early lead and outscoring their opponent 15-13 in the first quarter and 11-9 in second quarter, the Lady Canes lost some of that momentum going into the second half. The Lady Canes scored 16 to Metter’s 21 in the second half.

“We kept the entire game close but missed some key lay-ups in the final minutes that could have given us the win,” said Head Coach Tamika Thomas.

The former high school player and Ohio college recruit was a first-time high school basketball head coach this season. Mrs. Thomas is extremely proud of the young ladies who took to her style of leadership when she took over the coaching position in late summer last year.

When interviewed last fall, Coach Thomas said that one goal for the girls’ squad was to be better than the previous year—something they achieved with a trip to a Metter in spite of the loss.
