City Wide Yard Sale Is April 25

The Monticello City Council voted to host the annual city wide yard sale Saturday, April 25.

This is a benefit to citizens that want to sell their wares this spring. Residents can either sign up for a space on the Monticello square or have their home address listed on a city map for selling around the city. This is a widely attended sale for bargain hunters and is a value to local citizens.

The council also heard from Evangelist Tamieka Ross, with Mason Street Session Christian Ministries on the one year block celebration to be held on Mason Street Sunday, March 15 from 2-6 p.m. Ms. Ross spoke to the council stating that she has had an ongoing Mason Street ministry each Thursday for the last year. It was approved for the block off of one block of Mason St. from Funderburg Drive to Star (Fred Smith) Street.

Ms. Ross said that the celebration will include prayers, scripture readings, testimonies, handouts, music, food and fun. She said that Mason St. Session would also like to adopt the street and keep it clean. She also said that in the event of an emergency, she had people on hand to have everything accessible in about one minute.

Council member Cornell Williams spoke in favor of the celebration stating that “this has been a blessing.” “The need in this area is great. It is in my district and I am in support of it, and Ms. Ross has gotten the permission of everyone on the street.”

Councilman David Wease also spoke in favor stating that what she was doing was a “bonus,” and that he appreciated everything she had done already.

Councilwoman Katherine Alexander said, “I see this as a blessing to the community and I am all for this.”

Bobby Jacobs, Mayor pro tem said that he was glad to see that the ministry wanted to keep that street clean. He also said that he would “come out and celebrate that day.”

The council also voted to appoint John Stork to the Jasper County Library board to fill the vacated spot from Glenn Newsome.

The council voted to include a newsletter in the monthly utility bills. They also passed the consent agenda of minutes and payables.

The council voted to approve a new sign for Circle K located at the corners of Hwys. 212 and 16. The old sign was taken down during the Georgia Department of Transportation project.

Council members voted to send a gas lines cost waiver for Monticello Baptist Church, which is adding a new parking lot, into a committee for a decision.
