‘Canes Win Three

The varsity Hurricane basketball squads traveled to Bleckley County Tuesday evening for their fifth region competition of the season.

The road trip earned the boys’ squad its third consecutive victory including a huge region win.

The 70-35 victory landed four Canes players in double digits for points. Quinton Standifer led the scoring with 12 points; C.J. Adams earned 11; Jakari Middlebrooks and De’Miria Glover each had 10 points.

Glover also managed to nab an astounding 15 rebounds against Bleckley.

Coach B.J. Thomas is extremely pleased with the team’s cohesion of play as the region stretch thickens.

The Canes earned a victory in Jackson against the Red Devils on Saturday. The long-time area foe went down 80-75 at the hands of the Canes.

Three Cane players including senior Standifer and juniors Jordan Stone and Glover, led the scoring at 17 points each. Adams had 13 points; Middlebrooks, 8, Avery Davis, 5, and Ashton Bonner, 3.

Glover was named Player of the Game as he added 10 rebounds, five offensive and five defensive, to his statistics. He also earned 1 assist, 2 steals, and went 9-of-11 in free throwing.

Middlebrooks had 4 offensive and 1 defensive rebounds while Adams had 2 offensive and 4 defensive rebounds, and Stone had 1 offensive and 4 defensive rebounds.

Free throw shooting proved stellar with four of seven shooters earning 80 percent or better from the free throw line. Standifer went 9-of-10; Adams went 4-of-5; and Davis was 2-of-2.

Stone led in assists with 6; Adams added 3, and Standifer had 2 assists while also earning 3 steals.

The Canes earned another region victory over Macon County Friday on the road. In the 77-71 win, the Canes had a decisive first quarter outscoring their opponent by more than 50 percent.

Standifer was named Player of the Game while earning 16 points, 3 rebounds and an assist. Usually 80 percent or better in free throw shooting, he went 6-of 10 from the line.

Adams and Middlebrooks each added 12 points; Stone had 10; Glover, 9: Davis, 6; Bonner, 5; Desmond Nash, 4; Shakur Sands, 3.

In free throws, Stone was 6-of-6; Middlebrooks was 2-of-2; Bonner was 5-of-6; and Adams was 3-of-4.

Middlebrooks contributed 8 rebounds while Glover and Adams each added 7 rebounds. Stone had 5 assists and Middlebrooks added 4.

The Lady Canes had a close loss to Bleckley Tuesday following a victory at Jackson and and loss at Macon County.

The loss at Bleckley gave the girls’ squad its first region loss of the season making them 4-1 in the region action.

The Lady Canes earned a 56-35 win over Jackson Saturday but fell 52-43 to region foe Macon County the previous night.

Against Jackson, the Lady Canes got off to a quick start outscoring the lady Red Devils 18-to-6 in the first and never let up leading the entire game.

Unlike Saturday, the girls got off to a delayed start against Macon leading a charge in the second half but still came up short.

The varsity basketball Canes will return to home action this weekend by hosting archrival and region foe Putnam on Friday, Jan. 16 beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the JV boys team. This competition will be a big one for the Canes as the outcome will determine the #2 seed for the 4AA region thus far.

On Saturday, Jan. 17 the Jackson Red Devils will head to town in hopes of reversing last weekend’s outcome on the Hurricanes home court.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20 Northeast visits for a region match beginning at 6 p.m. with the girls.
