Canes Win First Region Game
It was a good night to be a Hurricane basketball fan on Tuesday. Both varsity squads defeated Northeast Macon in their first region game of the season.
The 40-33 victory was especially sweet for the Lady Canes who were winless going into the competition.
Nothing like having the first win of the season also be a region win. Though the ladies are 1-5 on the season they are 1-0 in the region.
Coach Tamika Thomas was excited about the victory and the improved free throw shooting.
Prior to the win the ladies fell to a strong Henry County squad Saturday at home.
Varsity boy’s head coach BJ Thomas felt really good about the 79-54 defeat of Northeast as they are the defending region champions of 2013.
“Our defense was great and we improved on effort tremendously. Our boys accepted the challenge and bought into the goal.”
De’Miria Glover had a stellar night earning a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds; Jordan Stone added 14 points; Jakari Middlebrooks had 13 points and 9 rebounds just missing a double-double; and Avery Davis and Quinton Standifer each had 10 points.
Although the squad fell 56-47 to Henry on Saturday, Coach Thomas said he saw some good things that the team had improved on since the loss to Jones.
”There was good defense and our effort were significantly better but our offense hurt us. We just couldn’t score.”
Middlebrooks led the scoring with 12 points and Glover added 9.
Up next for the ‘Canes squads are road trips to Jones Friday, Dec. 12 and Greene, Saturday, Dec. 13. before returning home for their second region game of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 16 against Lamar. JV boys will begin at 5:30 p.m. this weekend with varsity at 7 p.m. Tuesday’s games will tip-off at 4:30 p.m.
