Mat ‘Canes Post Wins

The Monticello Hurricane wrestling team is gearing up for its first tournament of the season this Saturday and the two team victories earned Tuesday against Greene and Oglethorpe counties aided in that process.

The Mat Canes traveled to Greensboro for a three-team match-up defeating Oglethorpe 42-36 while earning a decisive victory over Greene 54-30.

Individuals who went 2-0 on the day included Noah Faubli, Naill Al Hasi, Jacob Bowers, Payton Harwood, Tyler Seawright, and Chris Anglin.

Prior to the Thanksgiving holidays, the wrestling team hosted a four-team match with Southwest, Mt. de Sales, and Henry County. The Mat Canes earned team wins against Mt. de Sales and Henry but loss to Southwest.

Individual results from that meet included Jake Hooser going 3-0 with 3 pins; Seawright also went 3-0 with 2 pins; Al Hasi and Harwood each went 3-0.

“Our guys are doing a good job and we’ll just keep practicing trying to get better,” said Cane wrestling head coach Andy Rewis.

Coach Rewis said the team had a few guys that were currently out with injury. The team travels to Walnut Grove Saturday, Dec. 6 for a 9 a.m. start of a 14-team tournament, their first this year.

The Mat Canes will follow that tournament with the hosting of Henry and Jones counties on Wednesday, Dec. 10 for a 5:30 p.m. match.
