General Election Is November 4
Early voting for the November 4 mid-term elections began this week and will continue until Friday, Oct. 31.
Numerous statewide offices are up for grabs, with the biggest slugfest being between Republican incumbent Gov. Nathan Deal and Democrat challenger Jason Carter and between Republican David Perdue and Democrat Michelle Nunn for the U.S. Senate seat.
Those races may end up requiring run-offs as there are also Libertarian candidates on the ballot in both those races.
Locally, two Jasper County commission races are on the ballot.
District two sees long-time former commissioner Charles Hill trying to win his seat back from Bruce Henry who was elected in 2012.
District 4 was also scheduled for election this year, however, only incumbent Craig Salmon qualified. So the only distinctly local race is that for district two commissioner.
Monticello’s own Rep. Susan Holmes as well as Sen. Burt Jones neither face opposition.
For U.S. Congress from the 10th Congressional district, Republican Jody Hice and Democrat I.K. “Kenneth” Dious are battling for that seat.
In addition, there are two proposed constitutional amendments and a proposed statewide referendum which can be read on page 11 of today’s paper in the legal section. (A sample ballot is scheduled for publication next week.)
Early voting takes place in the Courthouse Monday through Friday during business hours. Voters will also be able to cast a ballot on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The “Ga Votes” mobile app is a great free resource for voting information. Georgia voters can view their specific sample ballot, find their polling locations, check their voter registration status and track the status of their absentee ballot. All of this information is available on mobile devices on Apple and Android platforms. To download the app search for “GA Votes” in the App Store.
