Mrs. Sophia Banks Ussery
A celebration of life for Mrs. Sophia Banks Ussery was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 at noon at the chapel of Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 923 Funderburg Drive, Monticello, with Rev. Carla P. Hill Officiating / Eulogist.
“God said the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, He gently closed those loving eyes, and whispered ‘Peace be Thine’.”
Today we are celebrating the life and memory of Mrs. Sophia Banks Ussery. She was born in Jasper County, Monticello, Georgia, on December 24, 1921 to the late John (Sug) Banks and Marinda Epps Banks. Sophia was the youngest of five children.
All preceded her in death—two sisters Floura Banks Harris, Annie Banks; brothers, John Benjamin Banks, Felton Banks and Nephead Leon Banks.
She was called to her eternal resting place on September 13, 2014 at the Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello.
She accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and became an active member of Sardis C.M.E. Church. After finishing high school, she attended Fort Valley State College for two years. She left college and was employed at Warner Robins Air Force Base for many years.
Most of her adult life was spent in Macon. After leaving Warner Robins Air Force Base, she did private personal domestic work until her retirement. Sophia was united in holy matrimony with John Ussery. This union started swiftly and ended abruptly. Sophia united with Hosley Temple C.M.E. Church and remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. She served and worked on the Missionary Board, Pastor’s Board and the Mother’s Board at Hosley Temple.
Surviving her departure with cherished memories are a niece, Sybil Harris, a first cousin, Rosa L. Broddus, a devoted cousin and care giver, Ulysses Carter, the entire Epps family and many other relatives and friends. Sophia was a spiritual and God loving person. Her sweet demeanor and kind and loving spirit will be long remembered by all who knew her.
Sophia lived a compassionate life and her life will conclude with these words, All Is Well!
