Lady Cougars Struggle Against Flint River
Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team was back on the field Tuesday, falling to Flint River 9-7 in a home region contest.
The Lady Cougars found themselves in an 8-1 hole in the third inning only to battle back to pull within two runs at one point. Flint River added one more run in the top of the seventh for the 9-7 final.
“The big inning hurt us,” said coach Daniel Funt. “I was proud of the way the girls battled back. They are a scrappy bunch of players. A couple of decisions on my part attributed to a big inning for Flint River, which I take the blame for. A defensive philosophy is in place for a reason and I didn’t follow it. The players will keep fighting though. That is what they do.”
The two teams will meet again next Tuesday.
“This is a great group of players,” Funt said. “We are not out of it.”
Piedmont recorded a 15-0 home region game victory against LaGrange Academy last Thursday. The Lady Cougars needed just three innings to earn the win.
After scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first, Piedmont added five runs in the second inning and three more in the bottom of the third.
“We got off to an excellent start against LaGrange,” Funt said. “The players showed up and were excited to play, but they were relaxed at the same time. That is how you love a team to play.”
Cheyenne Galloway was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Amelia Dodson was also 2-for-3 with a double. Matti Smith was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Morgan Tillman was 1-for-2 with a triple, walk and two runs.
Remington Marsh also went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Haley Tyler was 1-for-3 with a run.
O’Neil Sealy pitched all three innings with two strikeouts. She did not allow any hits.
On Saturday, Piedmont hosted Windsor and the teams were tied 1-1 in the third inning when lightning and rain cancelled the finish.
In addition, Monday’s scheduled home game against Brentwood was cancelled due to the field conditions after more rain Sunday evening and Monday morning.
Piedmont also defeated Griffin Christian 15-0 on Sept. 9 in just three innings. The Lady Cougars scored six runs in both the first and second innings before adding three more in the top of the third.
Sealy pitched a no-hitter and was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBI.
Piedmont returns to action today, Sept. 18, against LaGrange Academy at 5 p.m. on the road in Region 1-AA action.
The Lady Cougars will also travel to Flint River Tuesday, Sept. 23, for a 4 p.m. contest.
