‘Canes Fall in Shortened Game
The Canes traveled to Macon last Friday to take on the Vikings of First Presbyterian Day. Unfortunately the Canes came up short again, with the score being 9-6. It was again a heart breaker with the game being called just after halftime.
The Canes have lost their first three games this season by a total of 9 points. This just goes to show how well the Canes have been playing, despite the loss.
The captains for the evening were Thomas Deraney, Quincy Standifer, and Walt McMichael. The game started out as a defensive matchup with both teams having a hard time scoring. About 4 minutes into the game, Lane Thomas took a punt return all the way down to the 6 yard line, which gave the Canes a perfect scoring opportunity, and unfortunately, the Canes were unable to push it in.
The Canes only had the ball one time in the first quarter which hurt the Canes’ rhythm on the offensive side of the ball. It wasn’t anything different for FPD; it was hard for them to score as well. It wasn’t until less than four minutes left to play in the half, when FPD put the only score of the half on the board, with a field goal made.
The score was only 3-0 with the Vikings up at the half. However, there was great defensive presence in the half by the Canes with Garrison Williams, Xavier Gude, and Colton Clay on multiple tackles.
It wasn’t until the second half, when the Canes started to get some momentum going. And it started with Thomas beginning the half with a great return bringing it out to the 50. The Canes started to get some life with great first down runs by Jordan Stone, Jay Johnson, and Standifer.
The Canes were back in the game at this point, as Standifer punched in a score for the which gave the Canes only touchdown of the evening. The score was now 6-3 with about 7 minutes left to go in the third.
Unfortunately, on the very next drive the Vikings scored another touchdown, which gave them the lead, 9-6. As soon as the game started to get interesting, the sky opened up and there was a lightening delay with about 4 minutes left to go in the quarter, which sent the players to the locker room. The storm didn’t seem to calm down, so the game was called. Due to the Vikings being up at the delay, they were awarded the victory.
“It wasn’t an easy way to lose, but we must continue to work hard and we have to move on and get ready for Friday, our time is going to come we just have to be patient,” said Coach Doug Huff.
The Canes will play the Morgan County Bulldogs this Friday at the Rose Bowl field. Kick off is 7:30. It’s been literally 30 years since the Hurricanes have beaten the Bulldogs.
Junior Garrett Scroggs said, “ We’re going to come ready to play, it’s been awhile since we’ve beaten Morgan, so we have to be sure to come focused and determined to win.“
Go Canes!
