Johnny Lee Davis, Sr.
A celebration of life for Mr. Johnny Lee Davis, Sr., was held Sunday, Aug. 31, at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Jimmy Horton, pastor, officiated; burial was in South View Cemetery.
Mr. Davis died August 24, 2014.
Mr. Davis was born on October 15, 1945 in Monticello to the late Margaret Clark-Davis and the late John Thomas Davis. He decided to dedicate his life to Christ at St. John C.M.E. Church in Monticello at a early age.
In 1964, he graduated from Jasper County Training School in Monticello. He was employed by Wright and Lopeze Construction Company of Atlanta before entering the Army. Pvt. 1st Class Davis was stationed at Ft. Lee, Va., before arriving overseas.
Johnny Lee Davis arrived in Vietnam on October 26, 1965, and was assigned as a member of the 563rd Heavy Supply Company. He served two years in Vietnam. Many of his years were spent as a machine operator at Mobil Chemical in Covington, which later became Pactiv, from which he retired.
Johnny Lee’s legacy will forever remain through his grandchildren. His family and friends will ensure that his grandchildren will forever remember the spirit of their grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Miller; sons, Johnny Lee Davs, Jr. (Lona), in Afghanista; Tijara Miller of Monticello; stepson, freddie L. Miller (June) of Eatonton; daughters, Chelsea Dennis (Henry) of Social Circle, Niasia Davis of Monticello; stepdaughter, Katina Miller (Willie) of Eatonton; brother, Leonard Davis (Catherine J.) of Monticello; sisters, Ella Joyce Whitening (Rosevelt) of Sumter, S.C., Ida Louise Minter (Charlie), Bonnie Davis, JoAnn Thurman (Johnny), all of Monticello; Laverne D. Pennamon of Covington; Robbie Davis of Milledgeville; a special sister, Margaret Ann Davis of Monticello; and a special cousin, Stanley Roach of Monticello; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three aunts, Annie M. Clark, Ollie Robinson and Annette Tripp, all of Monticello; an uncle, Joe K. Davis of Monticello, also a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Johnny Lee will always be remembered for his warm and friendly smile and seeing him riding around in his truck with his arm hanging out the window.
Pallbearers for the service included Maurice Davis, Vernon Davis, Joe Tripp, Jr., Ahmad Campbell, Freddie Miller, Jr., and Ray C. Tripp. Honorary pallbearers were Stanley Roach and Dwan Pennamon.
Nieces and cousins were flower bearers. Repast was a Springfield Baptist Church annex.
Smith and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
