Lady Cougars Win
The Piedmont Academy softball team was in need of a victory Monday afternoon and the Lady Cougars got one.
Piedmont defeated Brentwood 3-2 to return to the winner’s side.
“I was proud of the girls for bouncing back after last week,” said coach Daniel Funt. “This was a good team win. I talked to them about not being afraid of close games. I know they were nervous, but they didn’t show it.”
Piedmont scored runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. O’Neil Sealy earned the win working all seven innings allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
Taylor Swart, Emily Hammonds, Morgan Tillman, Matti Smith and Ashley Johnston helped lead the offense.
“The pitching and defense was much improved which allowed us to keep the game close,” Funt said. “Offensively, we took advantage of some mistakes they made. I know we are capable of putting up more runs, we have showed it already. But if we can pitch and play defense and wait for other teams to make mistakes, we can be successful against any team in any situation. That will be the name of the game down the road in the region and the playoffs.”
Prior to Monday, the Lady Cougars fell to Gatewood 8-1 Friday on the road.
Swart drove in the lone run for Piedmont in the top of the fifth. The Lady Cougars were held to just three hits offensively.
Gatewood scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second inning by pushing five runs across.
Sealy went the distance for the Lady Cougars and had one strike out.
“It was a week that as a player or coach you just want to forget about and move on from,” Funt said. “It happens in this game.
The ‘it’ I’m referring to is where nothing goes right. We did not do anything particularly well. I am proud of our team for sticking together and continuing to work hard. I just want it to translate into production for them.”
Piedmont will return to action Saturday, Sept. 6 when the Lady Cougars travel to Loganville Christian Academy for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Middle School Lady Cougars will travel to Trinity Christian in Dublin today, Aug. 28, for a 4 p.m. game.
