Godly Men & Women

Throughout the Bible we read about a lot of godly men and women.

Men and women whom gave their best to the Lord and whom were faithful without fault. Yet some of these same people eventually falter and do things against the will of God. Some seek forgiveness and return to God. Some never do. A lot of these examples were kings, that is, government leaders.

I have often thought it would be nice to run for a political office. A lot of decent men and women have gone into politics only to be corrupted by politics. Of course, I could write pages on this, but I will not. Some of these politicians succeed, but many fail.

When visiting Plains, Ga., I am reminded that there are godly men who have been in politics. In Plains, there lives a president who teaches a Sunday school class as often as he can. I’ve been to his class. I enjoyed it. All presidents have their strengths and weaknesses, but I do admire the honesty and commitment former President Carter has to God and the people of God.

You can’t fault a man who does so much for folks around the world, be it building homes or providing medical resources to those in need or someone committed to teaching a Sunday school class.

Right after my wife and I married, we took a trip to Plains. We visited the historical sights and we attended the Sunday school class and worship service at President Carter’s home church. The next day while we were touring Plains, we walked into a restaurant.

We had no idea whether to seat ourselves or wait to be seated.

The restaurant was almost full and we really didn’t see anywhere to sit. In the midst of the restaurant patrons, a man stood up and told us there was a table next to him. You guessed it. The man was President Carter. To our right sat former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter. To our left sat the Secret Service. In all my years, I never thought I would be sandwiched between a former president and his protectors.

During this same visit, we were able to get, as was anyone, a picture with President and Mrs. Carter. We cherish this picture. Not because he is a former president, but because he was and is a godly man before, during, and after his presidency.

Our nation, our state, and our local county are always in need of more godly men and women in public office. I pray that if God is calling you as a Christian to serve in such a capacity that you will consider this for the sake of all levels of our government. Indeed, we need to work to make our nation a more God-fearing nation.

Like the kings of old, I am both a dedicated Christ-follower and at times a less than ideal Christ- follower. Thankfully, I serve a God who loves me, forgives me, and restores me to His service, day after day. May all of us in America have this as a daily goal.
