‘Canes Win Scrimmage

It was a beautiful evening last Friday, when the Hurricanes traveled to Greene County to take on the Tigers in a scrimmage game. The ’Canes had a spirited crowd as fans came and watched the ’Canes get their first win of the season, 33-20.

The ’Canes started off well, with a first down pass completion from junior quarterback #10 Thomas Deraney to #4 Quincy Standifer.

The ’Canes continued to push the ball up field while they received great first down yardage from #3 Jay Johnson and #12 Jordan Stone.

With a little under five minutes left to play in the first quarter, #11 Garrison Williams punched it in for the ’Canes first score of the evening. Not long after that, the ’Canes recovered two fumbles, one for a change of possession and the other one for a touchdown credited to #25 Colton Clay. The ’Canes were up at the end of the first 13-0.

In the second quarter, the ’Canes controlled the game despite the fact that the Tigers scored their first touchdown of the game with a little more than four minutes remaining in the half. Due to a possession change the ’Canes scored another touchdown before the half, on a short pass from Deraney to Stone. The ’Canes were up at the half, 20-6.

Nothing changed for the ’Canes after the half. They came out with great intensity on both sides of the ball and kept control of the game. With the ’Canes defensive line pressuring the Tigers quarterback and a big interruptive tackle by Standifer, Johnson intercepted a pass and took it for a long run just outside the end zone.

With a strong run by Stone again, the ’Canes punched it in the end zone one more time and made the score 27-6.

At the top of the fourth, #33 John Davis received a handoff around the 40 yard line from #5 Gavin Williams and he took it to the house for about 60 yards for the ’Canes final score of the game, which made it 33-13. The Tigers scored the final points of the night.

Head coach Doug Huff had positive words the game. “I was very pleased with the effort that we showed on the field. We have to clean some things up after watching film and do a better job executing our plays. But we’re working real hard, we have a great group of kids, I’m proud of them, and we are getting better every day.”

The ’Canes will play another scrimmage tomorrow, Aug. 22 versus 4A Cross Creek of Augusta at Rose Bowl field. Kick off is 6:30 p.m. Come out to support your ’Canes as they get their season started. Go ’Canes!
