School Board Renews Superintendent’s Contract

The Jasper County School Board members voted unanimously Tuesday to extend superintendent Dr. Mike Newton’s contract through 2016.

This came after the board went into closed “executive” session to discuss his evaluation and voted in open meeting to extend his contract with Jasper County schools.

New hires apparoved at Tuesday’s regular meeting included Dametria Jackson, custodian, Jasper County Primary School (JCPS); Mandie Behling, media paraprofessional, JCPS (from part-time to full-time); Matt Garvin, and Stephanie Gibson paraprofessionals, JCPS; Neil Banks, custodian, Washington Park Elementary School (WP); Amanda Cheek and Kelly Coady, teachers, JCPS; Sanna Wise, teacher, WP; Autumn Swarner, school counselor, JCPS; Shannon Usry, Arlene Stone, and Sharita Wise, paraprofessionals, WP.

Other new hires include, Nancy Moore, school food assistant, Jasper County Middle School (JCMS); Stephanie Clemons, school food assistant, WP; Jackie Moore, school food assistant, JCPS; Steve Dukes, school food assistant manager, JCMS; and Thomas Head and Marvin White, bus drivers, Jasper County Transportation Department.

The board voted to accept the resignations of Mandi Tanner, Georgette Tarpley, Terri Butts, and Larry Fielding.

Alicia Moore was hired as the assistant principal at Jasper County High School. Ms. Moore was previously a teacher at the school. Theresa Wright was hired as school food manager at JCMS.

The board discussed many policies that had been recommended that will be placed on the table for review until their August meeting.

Dr. Newton told the board that the state was offering “just shy of $1 million” to fund the JCPS roof and HVAC renovations. He said that a high bid came in at around $3.2 million for the entire project but felt that the job could be done for substantially less money.

He said that the state approved process would allow the improvements to begin next summer and the planning and bidding was likely to begin in September-October of this year.

The board announced that open house will be held August 6. The board will also meet August 7, for their work session, prior to school beginning Aug. 8.
