Veterans’ Appreciation Parade Is Saturday

American Legion Post 110 will host its second annual Veterans’ Appreciation Day and parade on the Square in Monticello this Saturday, June 14, with activities beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs of Monticello will ride in the parade along with the honored veterans of World War II and women veterans who are the featured veterans this year.

The Legion Riders will gather at Ingles, then ride around the Square at 8:30 a.m. The Legion Color Guard will then raise the flag at 89 a.m.

That will be followed by a day of music, speakers, vendors, and more, with a parade planned at noon, leaving from Funderburg Park and coming around the Square. A program with guest speakers begins at 1 p.m. The festivities will end with a flag retirement ceremony at about 2:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to come to Monticello and meet and honor all veterans, with the emphasis for this year’s ceremony being on the women veterans, and continuing to honor the World War II veterans.

There will be numerous speakers honoring the veterans, and Monticello Mayor Bryan Standifer will be presented with a flag for the city at 8:45 a.m.

Colt Lucas and friends will provide music as well as the Georgia Flood and other entertainment.

In addition to meeting with the veterans, people are encouraged to greet and pet the only K9 member of an American Legion Color Guard, Trooper, who loves to be petted.

WJGA radio station in Jackson will carry the festivities on live radio, and the Legion knows it has a 94 year old women veterans, and several others.
