Diamond ‘Canes Head to Postseason
The Diamond ’Canes defeated rival Putnam last Wednesday 10-4 on their home field making Senior Night memorable for the ’Canes.
Senior night festivities were held before the first pitch which was thrown by Coach Kenny “Mo” Moore.
Walt McMichael, Chase Caron and Justin Bradley led the hitting for the ’Canes who scored seven of their 10 runs in the first two innings. Putnam could not keep up, only scoring two runs in the first two innings.
The third and fourth showed no score for either team with Dustin Womack, Tony Shumate and McMichael, with 4 strikeouts, all working the mound for the ’Canes.
The ’Canes bats came alive again in the fifth scoring two runs and they added an additional in the sixth. McMichael and Justin Bradley each had 2 RBIs and McMicahel and Chase Caron each earned 2 walks and each led in the QABs against Putnam.
Putnam tried to come back but could not catch up adding one in the fifth and one in the seventh.
“Putnam was a good win on senior night. It’s always nice to recognize those kids and the hard work and dedication they’ve shown over their four years, then come away with a win,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins.
The ’Canes also defeated Strong Rock Christian 4-2 last Friday. Coach Jenkins said, “the strong rock game was also a good win. They are a solid team that had to beat us in order to get into the playoffs. So it gave us a taste of the type of atmosphere and intensity we’ll see next week at Jeff Davis.”
Michael Wyatt pitched a complete game and Chase Caron drove in the game winning runs with a double late in the game.
Region playoffs will begin tomorrow, Friday, May 2 with the first game being against Jeff Davis at 4 p.m.
