Alcovy Shores Water Authority Meets
Quite a few local citizens attended the April 29 Alcovy Shores Water and Sewage Authority board meeting held at their office.
System operator, Juanita Gazaway, led the quorum meeting where new business included approval of the 2014 budget, announcing that there were no violations of water quality as reported by the EPD, approving the yearly audit, and increased costs for repairs during winter.
It was announced by Ms. Gazaway that she is trying to acquire a grant for maintenance of the water tanks, if that fails, a low cost loan of between $75,000 to $100,000 will be needed.
Further discussion was had by audience as well as board members of a upcoming meeting on May 5 of the Jasper County Board of Commissioners. All were concerned about the possible appointments to the ASWSA by the JCBOC.
According to the JCBOC website, a notice was posted asking for volunteers to serve their community on the ASWSA, final date for submission was April 28. ASWSA board members and local citizens asked why these appointments were being made now instead of September when they are usually done. Several expressed concern that outside influences are trying to take over the Alcovy board.
Alcovy Shores along with Turtle Cove all have wells. Alcovy currently buys 65 percent of its water from Newton County Water and gets 35 percent from its well.
Local citizens asked that everyone get the word out to Alcovy Shores that they should attend the May 5 meeting to voice their opposition.
