MS Cougars Continue To Win

The Piedmont Academy Middle School baseball team continues to enjoy success on the diamond this spring.

Coach Dan Funt’s team defeated Central Fellowship 13-5 March 27 in a road game as Dalton Whitley, Browning Benton, Connor Olson and Sam Younker combined to share the pitching duties. Whitley recorded five strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Benton and Younker also recorded a strikeout.

At the plate, Whitley was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Younker finished 1-for-3 while Caleb Coffey scored two runs. Mitch Marsh also was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI and Zack Spivey was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Piedmont scored two runs in the second inning, five more in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Whitley had two stolen bases while Owen Brady and Talon Anglin had one each.

The Middle School Cougars also traveled to Bethlehem Christian Academy Monday and returned home with an 11-8 win.

Anglin was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs while Whitley was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Olson, Younker, Benton, Whitley and Brady all saw time on the pitcher’s mound.

Piedmont scored five runs in the both in the third and fourth innings and added one more in the seventh to have enough for the road win.

“I’m proud of the team’s effort as both wins were team victories,” Funt said.

Piedmont was swept in a Tuesday doubleheader at John Milledge, falling 8-1 and 8-6.

“Both games were tough,” Funt said. “We didn’t play well in the first inning of each game, and we put ourselves in a hole. In the second game, we let them back in the game in the bottom of the first. We are allowing too many runs as of late. We aren’t the kind of team that can put up runs at will. We have to do a better job all the way around. We have three more games to bounce back.”

In the 8-1 loss, Olson, Anglin and Coffey led the offense while Whitley and Benton handled the pitching duties. Both Whitley and Benton had two strikeouts.

The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the first in the next outing but could not hold on and fell 8-6. Benton was 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in four runs. Younker was 2-for-3 with two runs and Dylan Coe scored a run.

John Milledge used a four-run first inning and a four-run fourth inning to score enough to win. After scoring four runs in the top of the first, Piedmont added two more in the top of the third.

Olson worked 3.2 innings with three strikeouts before Brady pitched the final out.

Piedmont was scheduled to play at Lake Oconee Academy Wednesday of this week.
