Cougars Win Ninth in a Row
Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team posted its ninth consecutive win Tuesday by defeating region foe LaGrange Academy 15-2 in five innings.
Mac Brittain earned the win working three innings with four strikeouts. Malcom Tyler and Jacob Younker each pitched one inning. Tyler had three strikeouts in Monday’s home win.
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning. Tyler helped lead the offense with a grand slam and finished 2-for-4. Tyler Mills was 1-for-2 with two runs and RBI while Noah Quick was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Zach Beggs (1-for-3, one run, two RBI), Michael Edwards (1-for-1, one run, two RBI), Mike Davis (1-for-2, one run, one RBI) and Josh Williams (1-for-3, two RBI) helped lead a balanced offensive attack.
Prior to Tuesday, the Cougars swept a pair of games Saturday defeating Covenant Academy 12-3 and Monsignor Donovan 15-0 in three innings.
In the win against Covenant, Mike Davis earned the win working 4.1 innings. Brittain and Wyatt Galloway both pitched in relief. Davis had three strikeouts while Brittain had two.
At the plate, Piedmont was paced by a 2-for-2 performance by Williams, who also drove in two runs. Hunter Knox was 1-for-2 and drove in two runs while scoring twice. Brittain connected for a homer and was 1-for-4 with four RBI.
Jared Smith, Tyler and Andrews also contributed offensively.
In the second game of the afternoon for the Cougars, a six-run first inning and a nine-run second inning proved to be more than enough for Piedmont against Monsignor Donovan. Beggs worked two innings and recorded five strikeouts before Younker closed the door with two strikeouts.
Edwards was 2-for-2 with a run and RBI while Alan Powell was 3-for-3 with a run and three RBI. Mills was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI while Galloway reached home twice. Zack Wilson finished 1-for-2 with a run and Smith was 1-for-1 with a run and RBI.
Coach Danny Camp’s team is now 9-1 overall and 2-0 in region play.
Piedmont will host Bethlehem Christian Academy, the defending Class A state champion, today, March 27, at 4:30 p.m. before returning to region action Friday at Griffin Christian, also at 4:30 p.m.
