Qualifying Is Slow Locally; Brisk at the State Capitol
Qualifying for the upcoming non-partisan election and Republican and Democrat primaries on May 20 opened Monday, with two county commission seats up for election and three school board seats up for grabs.
As of close of business Tuesday, the only qualifiers were Bruce Henry, incumbent, for District 2 county commission, Craig Salmon, incumbent, for District 4 county commission, and Lewis Rice, District 5, school board.
Also, Susan Holmes has qualified for re-election for the state house of representatives, District 129, and Burt Jones for state senate, Dist. 10.

Qualifying by Tuesday afternoon for the 10th Congressoinal District to fill the seat being vacated by Paul Broun who is seeking Saxby Chambliss’ were Donna Sheldon of Monroe, Gary Garrard, Judy Hice of Monroe, M.A. “Mike” Collins, S. Mitchell Swan, and Stephen K. Simpson, all as Republicans.
In addition, I.K. “Kenneth” Dious of Athens qualified as a Democrat for the 10th Congressional Seat.
Other than Mr. Broun, those qualifying for Saxby Chambliss’ seat include J.H. “Jack” Kingston of Savannah, John Phillip “Phil” Gingrey of Marietta, and Karen C. Handel of Alpharetta, all as Republicans.
Democrats qualifying for that seat include Branko “Dr. Rad” Radulovacki of Atlanta and Todd Anthony Robinson of Columbus.
The Republican party has a number of debates and a candidate forum scheduled throughout the tenth district in the coming months.
Jasper County will host a debate on Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m., at Jasper County High School, 14477 Hwy. 11 North, Monticello.
The first debate will be in Walton County at the Monroe Community Center on Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. The second is in Wilkes County on Thursday, March 27, also at 7 p.m., at the Pope Center, Washington, GA.
The third debate is hosted by the Washington County GOP, on Monday, March 31, at 7 p.m. at the Oconee Fall Line Technical College, Ben Tarbutton, Jr., Auditorium, in Sandersville.
The candidate forum is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 at 8:30 a.m. at the Spotlight Theatre at Parkside Main, in Greensboro. Candidates must pay $125 to participate in that one; the others are at no cost to the candidate.
