HOME LOST

Jasper County volunteer firefighters responded to this structure fire Tuesday evening while snow showers were blowing, but they were unable to save the home.

Luckily, no nearby structures were hurt, though, and all the fire apparatus made it to the fire and back to their respective stations in spite of the roads beginning to ice up. The structure was located a 55 Pelican Court in Turtle Cove, and the fire was called in as a chimney fire.

When the first units, from Station 1, Jackson Lake, arrived, they called for more help, and firefighters from across the county responded.

According to a witness, one person was taken from the scene by ambulance, but it was not known at press time if the individual was a firefighter or civilian.

Snow did not begin to fall in Monticello and Jasper County for the most part until close to dark. Many businesses were closed Wednesday as the roads were iced over, and people were warned not to get out unless absolutely necessary.
