‘Canes Fare Well

The varsity Hurricane basketball teams are in the midst of a seven game region stretch and doing extremely well.

The region stretch began last Tuesday against Northeast Macon and continued Friday and Saturday at home against Taylor and Lamar Counties—six games, six victories.

Both squads are 7-3 in Region 4-AA following weekend victories. Four region games remain prior to the tournament which begins Monday, Feb. 10.

The Lady Canes, 13-8 overall, completely routed Northeast with a 62-31 win. Janee Chapman posted 30 points, the near sum total for the opposing team. Morgan Stokes added 11 points; Tiera Whitlock, 8; Maya Stokes, 5; Akeila Ross, 4.; Miata Dudley and Kemair Wilson, 2 each.

Taylor gave the local girls a little more competition making the margin of victory slimmer at 53-45. Chapman, again the lead scorer, had 21 points; Morgan Stokes, 13; T. Whitlock, and Maya Stokes, 8 points each; Sheridan Tripp, 2; and A. Ross, 1.

Lamar County went down 56-31 on Saturday. Chapman had 27 points; Whitlock, 10; Morgan Stokes, 8, A. Ross, 4; Maya Stokes, 3; S. Tripp, 3; and J. Thurman.

With recent convincing wins, the Lady Canes are well on the way to a successful region tournament and quite possibly state competition.

The varsity boys, 12-9 overall, faired just as well as their female counterparts though the victories were not quite as decisive. The Canes posted a 44-41 win against Taylor County. Qua Thurmond led the scoring with 11 points and Quinton Standifer added 10 points.

“Taylor County was at one time ranked #1 in Region 4-AA, and came into the game with only one loss in the region which came from Monticello,” said Coach Allen Atkins.

On Saturday, the Canes followed with a win over Lamar County, 73-62. Qua Thurmond had 24 points; Yuri Clay had 16, all in the first half; Avery Davis had 12, and Jordan Stone, 10.

The Hurricane squads were scheduled to play Tuesday at Crawford but inclement weather prevented that game. No date had been rescheduled as of press time this week.

In another schedule change, Saturday’s region away game at Macon County has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Jan. 31 at home beginning at 6 p.m.

Hurricane fans and alumni will have two guaranteed chances to support the local teams at home prior to the start of the region tournament.

Tomorrow the Hurricane squads host Macon County and next Friday they host region rival Putnam. Depending on how each team finishes the region and is seeded, Monticello High School could be the site of some region action.
