John Hugh Lewis

John Hugh Lewis, 71, of Marietta, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Golden Rose Assisted Living in Marietta.

Mr. Lewis was born in Shady Dale, on September 5, 1942, to the late Hugh Sherman Lewis and Geneva Grizzell Lewis.

A memorial service for Mr. Lewis will be held this Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Jordan Funeral Home.

He graduated from Monticello High School and attended West Georgia College and Beulah Heights Bible College. He was married to the late Evelyn Cantrell Lewis of Ellijay for 48 years.

He loved flying and served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot for four years with one year spent in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart. He owned and operated Palace Forge in Atlanta, specializing in custom wrought-iron furniture until his retirement in 2010.

Along with his parents and wife, his brother-in-law, Harrell Fountain preceded him in death.

He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria and Bob Lowrey of Athens, Joyce and Don Hearn of Gainesville, Fla., and Phyllis Fountain of Carrollton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the chapel of Jordan Funeral Home.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to one’s favorite charity.
